Pokemon Booster Pack

Which Pokémon Booster to buy?

Depending on the cards you're looking for, the type of Pokémon Booster will differ, especially depending on the year of issue. For fans of Pokémon GX cards, you'll need to opt for Sword and Shield or Sun and Moon Pack. For collectors of older editions, you'll often have to go and find Pokémon Booster Packs on resale sites, as they're often no longer available in stores.

If you really want to collect the latest exclusives and find rare, holographic Pokémon cards, you'll have to opt for the latest Packs available. Cards are put into packs at random, and no Booster Pack is more likely to have a specific card than another, otherwise it would be too easy!

Obviously, if you're looking for a specific rare card, find out in advance, as some are only available in certain editions. Pokémon fan sites will be able to advise you on which series to buy and what the odds are of obtaining your exclusive holo card.

How many cards are in a Pokémon Booster Pack?

Depending on the Pokémon Pack purchased, the number of cards may vary. The majority will contain 10 cards, with a few exceptions at 9 or 11 cards. In specific packs, there will sometimes be 5 Pokémon cards, but this is a relatively rare occasion, as they are often re-editions or limited editions.

More often than not, people will prefer to buy Pokémon Booster packs of 5 or 6, so as to have a better chance of finding the Holographic Card of their choice, especially for the latest generation Sword and Shield. This means you'll have around 60 cards to build up a Pokémon Deck ready for TCG matches!

If you want more cards at once, you can opt for a Pokémon Box that will contain between 10 and 30 Boosters at a time, and sometimes even an exclusive, super-rare card - what more could you ask for?

What's in the Booster Pack ?

In a classic Pokémon GX card pack, there will be 3 main categories of cards, which are classified by rarity. They are randomly added to the deck, each with a different percentage chance of being obtained.

  • 6 common cards
  • 3 uncommon cards
  • 1 rare card
  • 1 premium card (sometimes, as a bonus)

You'll be most interested in the rare card, as you'd expect. There'll always be a guaranteed one in your deck, but you'll never know in advance whether it'll have a specific design that makes it valuable to collectors.

Pokémon Card rarity

If you're a fan of Pokémon to the point of collecting cards and searching for hours and hours for the rare card that will make you a confirmed TCG collector. You'll need to know the orders of rarity of the cards before you'll know where to put them in your Pokémon Binder;

Even if you don't collect at all (or not yet), it's always good to know how sought-after your cards are: the more valuable they are, the better your chances of finding someone to trade them with!

> Common, uncommon and rare

These are the Pokémon cards you'll most often find en masse, and they're really not hard to figure out, at least for the first 2 categories (we'll come back to the rare ones later!). They are marked at the bottom right of the map, with:

  • A black circle for common
  • A black diamond for uncommon
  • A black star for the rare

Holo Rare

Pokémon Holo Rare cards have a brilliant image, which sets them apart from a classic rare card. For the record, they were among the first cards to make collectors want to have them all!

Reverse Holo

Like the cards above, Reverse Holo cards have a shiny part, but this time it's not the design! It's the outline of the card containing the text;

EX, GX, V Half Art / Half Body

These are the ones that everyone wants to have in their latest Pokémon Booster. They can be recognized by the design that fills at least the majority of the card and by a specific name.

They're considered Ultra Rares with unique mechanics. If you come across one of these, make sure you keep it in excellent condition with a Card Protector!

Full Art / Full Body

A variation on the cards mentioned above, but this time with the drawing on the whole card. It's sometimes difficult to read attacks on the Pokémon card, but it's also for the benefit of our eyes.

Secret Rare

These cards are the holy grail of collectors: they're the rarest of them all. You can tell by the number in the bottom left-hand corner of the card. If, for example, you see something like "115/113", this is one of them, and one of the most expensive on the market.

Rainbow Rare

These are also considered Pokémon Ultra Rare cards, and have been distributed very rarely since the release of Sun and Moon. They are also considered among the most expensive.

Vmax and Tag Team

Special mention for these cards, which have had their own rarity category since the appearance of Pokémon Sword and Shield Boosters with very specific battle mechanics such as Mega Evolutions.

Promo

Next to the black star in the bottom right-hand corner, you can sometimes see the note "Promo". This card has been distributed at a specific Event, such as the opening of a Pokémon store or a Pokémon TCG Card Championship;
